Grief is a complex universal reaction. The concept of grief is an artifact of modernity (Kastenbaum, n.d.). It is unique and personal, each journey is totally individualized, never the same for any two people. Losses that lead to grief can include but are not limited to, death, trauma, abuse, war, relocation, illness, aging, addiction, failure, and relationship dissolution (Vaterlau, 2014).Two triggers of grief associated with death The death of a loved one can be the most common form of grief; throughout life most people will experience this type of loss. The loss of a loved one can trigger grief such as depression, anger and fear.This essay explores my experience of loss and grief after the death of my father in 1997 and how my grieving process relates to theories put forward to explain and deal with bereavement. Hall (2014) suggests that “loss and grief are fundamental to human life”.Harvey (1998) perceives loss as a life experience relating to something irreversible and emotions towards what is lost.
